Anne Lamott begins by talking about something every writer has experienced: writers block, in the form of what she calls shitty first drafts. Understandind that the firstdraft will never be perfect, or even near as good as what writers desire their final product to look like is an essential part of any writing. Lamott explains that people belive writers can simply create these pieces of literature their first try, but as we all know this is not possible. Writing and composition are like a piece of art, like a statue, first one must take the rock and give it a general mold, then in the second draft one must refine it and make it into something more detailed and artistic. In the third step one must make the piece of art vibrant and realistic. Likewise for writing, it takes more than one draft to write things the way they should be. What Lamott is trying to express is that writing , like many things in life, is not achieved the first try, and it is not achieved without hard work. The writer must continue to construct on their piece until it has reached acceptable levels that they feel proud of.
